What is Gestalt?

Gestalt is a German word meaning “form,” “shape,” or “whole.”
The basic idea is that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

You are not just an expat living in the States, you are not just your profession, your education, your role in the family, you are not just your life experience. The sum of your parts is not who you are; YOU are more than the sum of your parts.

The key principles of Gestalt

• Here and Now: What do you feel, think, perceive in this moment?
• Awareness: Growth occurs when you become aware of what is happening inside and outside of you, and how you react.
• Contact and Boundaries: Exploring how you relate to your thoughts, others and the environment and how you disconnect to protect or recharge.
• Creative Adaptation: In gestalt, every behavior is seen as "the best solution you found to survive in a given moment" — Learning to recognize your mechanisms allows you to choose whether to act on them consciously or, if they are no longer functional, choose to change them.
• Experiential Work: Using techniques such as role-play, movement, voice, or the empty chair to explore experience in the present moment, and holistically.

Gestalt is particularly useful for:

  • People going through life transitions

  • Someone who feels disconnected from themselves or others

  • Who wants to change their behavior patterns

  • Anyone who wants to explore unresolved emotions or “unfinished business”

  • Anyone who wants to reconnect with their bodily sensations and intuition
